Why can China keep pictographic Chinese characters when most of the characters are arranged alphabetically?
I think there are several main reasons.
First, the history of China's ancient civilization has never been broken.
The history of China's ancient civilization, from the writing generation to the present, has never been broken.
Because the history of ancient civilization in China has never been broken, words have been used all the time.
Even the countries in the Central Plains were once ruled by Jurchen, Mongolia and Manchu, and Jurchen, Mongolia and Manchu also had scripts. But in the end, their characters did not develop, but Chinese characters continued. In order to protect Manchu and official documents, the Qing Dynasty wrote in Manchu and Chinese respectively. Obviously, the purpose of this red tape is to protect Manchu, prevent Manchu from being lost, and strive to promote Manchu throughout the country. However, although the government took strong measures, it did not achieve this goal in the end, and Manchu was not promoted throughout the country.
The hieroglyphics that have appeared in the history of other civilizations in the world are different. Besides Chinese characters, there are many hieroglyphs in the world, such as those of ancient Egypt, cuneiform characters of Sumerians, ancient Mayan characters and so on. However, due to the ancient countries and nations that used these characters, either the environment was too bad to lead to genocide, or foreign invasion destroyed their own civilization, or moved to other places. So the characters related to these ancient peoples, of course, died out and did not stay.
China has always been ahead of other countries in ancient times.
The history of ancient civilization in China has never been broken. At the same time, China's ancient civilization has always been ahead of the world.
Because China's ancient civilization has always been ahead of the world, it has become an example for all countries in the world to learn from. Everyone rushed to study in China and learn from China. When they come to China to study Buddhist scriptures, it is only natural that they should learn China's words and use China's words. In this way, China Chinese characters were also spread. The spread of Chinese characters has also preserved Chinese characters.
This situation is most typical in some countries around China. In fact, the characters of the countries around China, whether Japanese, Korean or other countries, have been deeply influenced by the ancient Chinese characters in China. They are singing now, but they have borrowed a lot from China.
Third, China had the ability to protect the development of its own characters in ancient times.
China's ancient military has always been relatively strong. In ancient China, there was a war with neighboring ethnic minorities, and it was rarely conquered by neighboring ethnic minority countries. Not conquered, not destroyed, so this nation survived, and so did the writing.
Although there were Yuan Dynasty, Qing Dynasty and other dynasties, they were all established after ethnic minorities defeated the Han nationality. But all of them were carried out under the condition of sinicization. Moreover, even if the Yuan Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty were established, they were always sinicized. That is to say, although the Han nationality was defeated by the surrounding ethnic minorities militarily, the powerful cultural genes within the Han nationality in turn defeated the surrounding ethnic minorities. Ethnic minorities are sinicized, so that the hieroglyphics of the Han nationality can be preserved.
Fourthly, China's hieroglyphics once disappeared but eventually survived.
As a matter of fact, when China moved towards modern times, it fell behind the western countries and was bullied by the western countries repeatedly, and finally reached the point of national subjugation and extinction.
At this time, among the intellectuals in China, there is a trend of abolishing the complicated ideographic hieroglyphs of Chinese characters and changing them to phonography, which is in line with the world. Many scholars participated in it, and they actively promoted the movement of abolishing Chinese characters and replacing them with phonography. Even scholars from all over the country held a meeting to work out a plan to replace Chinese characters with phonography.
The reason why so many scholars were doing it at that time was simple, because China was backward. And many people also blame traditional Chinese characters for China's backwardness.
However, the movement to abolish Chinese characters stopped after the founding of New China. Especially today, when China is rising again, no one has ever proposed to abolish Chinese characters and replace them with phonography.
In fact, this proves once again that China traditional culture with Chinese characters as its carrier has great vitality. With the escort of China traditional culture, Chinese characters in China will never disappear.
