[Modern Industrial Engineering] On the Understanding of Industrial Engineering and Modern Industrial Engineering

This is the wave.

The course of modern industrial engineering started yesterday, and the teacher is a professor with deep experience in this field. This article records my understanding of IE and modern IE. In order to cultivate the ability of English writing, an English version will be attached at the end of the article.

The industrial revolution led to the emergence of mass production, and with the expansion of production scale, managers are inevitably required to use new technologies to plan, design and improve production processes in order to improve productivity, which makes industrial engineering emerge as the times require.

Industrial engineering (IE) is an applied engineering technology developed on the basis of scientific management. Industrial engineering is a comprehensive interdisciplinary subject that comprehensively applies technology and management knowledge. It is engineering, practical, interdisciplinary, systematic, comprehensive, innovative and adventurous. American Institute of Industrial Engineering (AIIE) defines industrial engineering as:

The integrated system mentioned in the definition consists of people, materials, equipment, energy and information. It can be a factory or a city. The knowledge that industrial engineers need to master covers the fields of mathematics, physics and economics, management, psychology and other social sciences, which provides basic criteria and methods for industrial engineers to study integrated systems, so that they can confirm, predict and evaluate the output of integrated systems. The goal of industrial engineers is to improve the system through various optimization methods and technologies, thus reducing costs and improving productivity. To borrow a phrase often used by my undergraduate teachers, "There is always a better way", and the task of industrial engineers is to find this "better way".

With the development of the times, the disciplines and technologies on which industrial engineering depends are constantly improving. The integration of lean concept makes industrial engineering divided into traditional industrial engineering and modern industrial engineering. Traditional industrial engineering reduces costs and improves labor productivity by using ergonomics, operational research and other disciplines, such as action research, work measurement, material handling, production scheduling and balancing production lines. IE in this period is oriented to the interior of the enterprise, focusing on improving the efficiency of on-site operation.

Modern IE has greatly expanded on the basis of traditional IE. It absorbs the knowledge of system engineering, service management, computer science and supply chain management, and accepts modern science and technology, especially modern manufacturing system and information, network and computer technology. Modern IE faces the whole process of enterprise management, organically combines technology and management, and realizes the overall goal of enterprise management.

The industrial revolution led to the emergence of mass production. With the expansion of production scale, managers must use new methods to plan, design and improve the production process to improve productivity, which leads to the emergence of industrial engineering.

Industrial engineering is an applied engineering technology developed on the basis of scientific management. Industrial engineering is a comprehensive interdisciplinary subject that comprehensively applies engineering and management knowledge. It is engineering, practical, interdisciplinary, systematic, integrated, innovative and entrepreneurial. AIIE defines industrial engineering as follows:

The integrated system consists of people, materials, equipment, energy and information. It can be a factory or a city. The knowledge that industrial engineers should master covers the fields of mathematics, physics, economy, management, psychology and other social sciences. This knowledge provides basic standards and methods for industrial engineers to study integrated systems, so that they can specify, predict and evaluate the results obtained from such integrated systems. The goal of industrial engineers is to improve the system through various optimization methods and technologies, thus reducing costs and increasing productivity. As my undergraduate teacher often said, "There is always a better way", the task of industrial engineers is to find this "better way".

With the integration of lean production concept, industrial engineering can be divided into traditional industrial engineering and contemporary industrial engineering. Traditional industrial engineering reduces costs and improves productivity through ergonomics, operational research, work research, work measurement, production scheduling, line balance and other methods. The traditional IE is enterprise-oriented, mainly to improve the efficiency of on-site operation.

Contemporary IE has greatly expanded on the basis of traditional IE. It absorbs the knowledge of system engineering, service management, computer science and supply chain management. It also makes use of modern science and technology, especially modern manufacturing system and information, network and computer technology. Contemporary industrial engineering faces the whole process of enterprise management, and organically combines technology and management to achieve enterprise goals.
