The Origin of the Rottweiler Kennel
After the retreat of the Roman army, large mastiffs were left behind in the south of Europe with them, and these dogs later became known for hunting wild boar. During the Middle Ages, breeders in Rottweiler, Germany mated this Roman breed with indigenous sheepdogs to form the Rottweiler. The Rottweiler was used by Rottweiler butchers to guard their livestock or as a guard dog, hence the name Rottweiler Butcher's Dog. In the early 19th century, when German law banned the traditional method of chasing cattle and livestock were transported by railroad, the Rottweiler's reputation declined, and in the 1900's, Rottweiler fanciers worked hard to bring the dog back to prominence, introducing it to the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1930's.
The Rottweiler is an American breed, and it is one of the most important dogs in the United States.
