Before 2008, the Irish Premier League was sponsored by the title "FAI IRCOM Irish Premier League". Or "Irish Premier League" for short, it is the top football league in Ireland formed by the merger of the Irish Football Association (FAI) and the Irish Football League. It is the successor of the Irish Premier League, belonging to the first division of FAI Irish Football League, followed by FAI Irish First Division.

All the clubs in the old league were invited to join the new league. After the selection by the independent selection committee, the 12 teams with the highest score were assigned to the Super League, and the remaining 10 teams were assigned to the first division. In 2009, after Derry City from Northern Ireland was disqualified for violating the rules, all teams came from Ireland. Clover Rangers is the most successful team in the Super League, winning 15 leagues and 24 Irish Football Association Cups.
