How to train a dog: How to punish a dog Can you hit a dog? (Tips and principles for using negative stimulation and punishment)
Whether it's punishment in traditional training or negative stimulation in rattle training, it can make dogs feel uncomfortable. If they are used indiscriminately or abused, they can make the dog less bold or seriously affect the affinity relationship between the owner and the dog, so the timing and amount of punishment (or negative stimulation) is very important to grasp. Concerning the timing of punishment and negative stimulation, both traditional training and rattle training are based on the same criteria. The timing is either the moment the dog first starts the behavior or the moment the behavior is in progress, and the more accurate this timing is, the better. If negative stimulation or punishment is given after the bad behavior is over, then the human behavior is "retaliation". The effect of educating the dog will be greatly reduced or not at all effective. There are two ways to say quantity: one is the weight (or the intensity or strength of the stimulus); the other is the number. The strength of punishment is based on the tolerance of different dogs. Some dogs can be deterred by a few scoldings. Some dogs need to use a strong way to solve the problem, large dogs and small dogs of the force is also the same reason. A small dog can be stimulated with very little force, while a large dog requires a relatively large amount of force. Weak nervous dogs and timid dogs can be stimulated less vigorously, while active dogs or tough dogs can be stimulated more vigorously. In the same way, the same type of stimulation will have different effects on different dogs. In my many years of teaching, I have tried the same electrical stimulation collar on different dogs, and the results have varied from dog to dog. Some dogs received the stimulation and immediately made a stop to the bad behavior that was occurring, while a small number of dogs did not experience the sensation of being stimulated and would not stop the behavior that was being committed. Therefore, in the process of dog training, you must use negative stimulation or punishment from the light intensity to start, and pay attention to observe the dog's behavioral changes. If you find that the dog's excitement or affinity decreases, you should adjust the intensity of the stimulus or temporarily cancel the stimulus. Regarding the number of stimulation: the less the better, the better. The number of stimulation is based on the purpose and progress of the training. For example, when I am training dogs to resist stress or desensitize dogs that are allergic to petting, I use a lot of stimulation with little intensity. See the first 20 minutes of the 15th episode of the dog training textbook "Genius Owner Genius Dog Classic", in which I use a variety of tapping stimulation and obstacle stimulation to train a small black dog to resist stress and enhance the dog's desire, and I use a lot of stimulation, but with little stimulation intensity. As the training progresses, the number and intensity of stimuli will be increased so that the dog becomes more and more tenacious in the face of stress. For example, if you are training a dog to be particularly stubborn or to let go of the mouth in bite training, you can use a small amount of stimulation with a greater intensity, so that you can quickly see the results. At this time if you use electric shock training I will be much higher than the usual power, one or two larger electric shock can be y retained in the dog's mind, play an immediate effect. The use of negative and positive technology training, improve the quality of the dog to complete the subject, I will take a moment to stimulate, a moment not to stimulate the principle, so that the dog can not guess the master's mind. At this time the dog will remain focused to complete the subject. The dog training textbook "Genius Master Genius Dog Classic Edition" Episode 9 and 10 focus on negative reinforcement means and usage, and Episode 19 and 20 talk about the use of stimulation changes. During this time, I was training a Teddy named Curly Hair to back up, and he was doing very well, but during one of the backing up sessions, his buttocks inadvertently touched an empty metal box, and the sound of the box colliding with the ground startled him, and this negative stimulus was very heavy for him, and I didn't realize the consequences of this. The second time he stepped back he touched the box again and the consequence was severe - he refused to step back from then on. I stopped training this subject for a week and then re-trained it from the very beginning, and it slowly started to back up, but not as effectively as before. The above example demonstrates the effect of negative stimulation in terms of both intensity and quantity. For the use of shock collars, I also recommend that they be used only after the following two conditions are met: first, the training time is more than half a year, and second, the dog is more than 1 year old. The use of the shock collar is an important part of the dog training program "Genius Master Genius Dog Classic", which, in addition to correcting bad habits, can also improve the quality of the finished subject (so that the dog can finish the subject happily, quickly and accurately). In fact, correcting bad habits and training subjects are essentially the same and can be called training subjects. For example: correcting a dog's bad habit of picking up food indiscriminately can be interpreted as training a dog to refuse food; correcting a dog's barking can be interpreted as training a dog to be quiet; improving a dog's speed in the subject of "sitting" (after listening to the muzzle, some dogs sit or lie down slowly, which is the case for most of the dogs trained by traditional techniques) can be interpreted as correcting the dog's "slow completion of the subject". We can understand it as correcting the dog's bad habit of being "slow in completing the subject"; and we can understand it as correcting the dog's bad habit of not coming over when training the dog to come over to the subject. So correcting the dog's bad habits is to train the subject, and training the subject is also called correcting the dog's bad habits. Then the stimulus we use can also be used for training subjects can also be used to correct bad habits. From my experience in dog training I have gone through three stages of change, which I put out for your encouragement. Prior to the introduction of modern training techniques I used traditional training techniques which utilized a lot of pressure and stimulation. I would force the dog to complete the same subject over and over again for half an hour to an hour. The dog would repeat the same subject hundreds of times with repeated negative reinforcement, and the dog became a machine that passively completed the subject. When we give a command, the dog is forced to obey the subject. The state of the subject it makes is slow and lacks life. Although he knew that he would be rewarded for completing the subject, he was always afraid to deal with us. At this point I would proudly tell my buddies, "Look at me, I'm so powerful, the dog has to listen to me." In reality I had extinguished the nature of the canine, and many of the canine's own wonderful behaviors were prematurely stifled by me. The reason why sales of my early works: the Wolf Walking Thousands of Miles Dog Training CD-ROM and the Sequel were discontinued was also based on this reason. The second change in my thinking about the use of negative stimuli came when I was introduced to the rattle technique, which is a technique that basically does not use negative stimuli to train a dog, but advocates the use of the dog's natural instincts to make the dog active and lively. So it was with this in mind that my new book "Genius Master Genius Dog" was born. But there are new problems that arise from this stress-free training! We live in a world where negative stimuli and stress occur everywhere. Can this kind of trained dog be accepted by our reality? It reminds me of the curly haired dog that was trained to sit and quit a subject and the junior high school student who jumped off a building after being scolded by his teacher a few times. If I had taught my curly hair to accept the negative stimulation of all kinds of noises, he would not have been afraid to stop training even if he bumped into a metal box while retreating during the sit-and-retreat training. If this middle schooler had learned how to face and deal with stress earlier, he would still be laughing and playing with his peers today. That's where my mindset changed for the third time. I would like to thank Mr. Barton Beren, a very honorable man in my study of dog training. He allowed me to solve the above mystery. It was not just the theory that young dogs and first-time trainers should be involved in light stimulation as early as possible: allowing the dog to complete a task or eat a treat or get a toy under mild pressure. This produces a dog with a strong character that is more likely to adapt to complex environments. Under the guidance of this idea, I completed the preparation and shooting of the teaching materials of "Genius Master Genius Dog Classic Edition". After one year of promotion and one year of practice by the students, the excellence and perfection of this set of techniques have been fully confirmed; and many friends in the industry have also recognized me and the name Yin Jin. I would like to thank my fans who have been supporting me for many years, it is your positive encouragement that makes me shoot such classic works; at the same time, I am also grateful to those opponents who have questioned, doubted, and belittled me, and this kind of negative stimulation has forced me to keep improving. Using negative stimuli in a scientific way makes dog training more exciting, and using the right life view of stress makes life more exciting! Thanks again, for your patience in reading this one! This article was written by Yin Jin, author of the dog training textbook "Genius Master Genius Dog Classic Edition", so please keep my name in mind when reprinting. Thank you for your support!
