How to Improve Secondary Vocational School Students' Interest in Learning English

How to improve secondary vocational school students' interest in learning English?

First, the status of English teaching in secondary vocational schools

(A) the disadvantages of the traditional English teaching model.

The traditional English teaching mode is an "indoctrination" teaching mode in which teachers speak and students listen. Teachers are the center of teaching activities, the leaders of teaching activities and the imparting of knowledge, while students are the recipients of knowledge rather than participants. This English teaching mode deprives students of their dominant position. At the same time, the teaching methods are backward. For example, the teaching methods of English classes in many secondary vocational schools are still limited to writing on the blackboard, reading from the book, playing recordings and so on. , making English learning in boring explanations and passive exams, leading to poor teaching results. This outdated teaching mode and single teaching method violate the basic law of language learning, which not only makes it difficult for students to grasp the true meaning of English learning, but also obliterates students' subjective initiative, fetters students' thinking and further suppresses students' interest in learning English.

(B) the characteristics of English learning of secondary vocational school students.

1. Weak English foundation.

Most secondary vocational school students have a poor English foundation, a serious shortage of vocabulary, a relative lack of pronunciation and grammar knowledge, and poor listening and speaking skills. Even a considerable number of students' English level only stays at the level of knowing a few simple words, and they can neither understand nor speak in class. This happens all the time. Therefore, students' weak English foundation affects the cultivation or promotion of their English learning ability.

2. The learning motivation is not clear.

Secondary vocational school students are not only afraid of learning English, but also most students think that learning English is of little use and lacks a sense of mission and responsibility to society. Many students learn English only out of curiosity or temporary enthusiasm, and are dominated by unstable emotions. Their enthusiasm for learning is unpredictable. Students lack clear learning motivation, which leads to the teaching effect is still not obvious even if teachers do their best in class.

3. Lack of interest in learning and self-confidence.

Most students lose their interest and enthusiasm in learning English and their confidence in learning English well because of their weak foundation, laziness, unwillingness to work hard, or lack of timely help and encouragement in the learning process, thus affecting their motivation to learn English well.

Second, the importance of stimulating secondary vocational students' interest in learning English

In order to improve the English level of secondary vocational students and promote the development of English teaching in secondary vocational schools. The author has done a lot of surveys on different majors and classes. According to students, the main reason for their poor English is that they are not interested in English learning and have a blank foundation, and they don't know where to start. Some even said "proudly": "Failing English proves that I am patriotic." From these phenomena, it can be seen that the poor English level of secondary vocational school students does not mean that students' language learning ability is poor and hopeless. If teachers can stimulate students' interest in learning English, there is great room and possibility for improving students' English level and developing English education in secondary vocational schools. Therefore, stimulating students' interest in learning English is one of the effective ways for students to learn English well.

Third, ways to stimulate secondary vocational students' interest in learning English

(A) the use of effective teaching methods to improve students' enthusiasm for learning.

Nowadays, multimedia teaching methods make the original boring knowledge lively and interesting through concrete images, sounds and animations. It concretizes abstract things and simplifies complex contents. It vividly reflects the content of a class, and students certainly like to listen and watch it. In addition, the outstanding feature of multimedia teaching is that it can help teachers create a language environment, which is very useful for English teaching. With this teaching method, students can easily enter the state, fully express their views in English in the environment created by teachers, and fully mobilize students' learning interest and motivation. In this fun-filled, relaxed and pleasant classroom atmosphere, teachers and students can exchange ideas and feelings naturally and fully, and can better maintain students' interest and high enthusiasm for English learning.

(B) entertaining, so that students can gain knowledge from entertainment.

(1) Today's English textbooks are very suitable for daily life, such as greeting each other, making phone calls, introducing new friends, playing games, talking about the weather, shopping and borrowing books. These are common things in students' daily life. Once they have mastered this knowledge, they can use it in actual language communication. Teachers should try their best to introduce real life into teaching. For example, when teaching "Asking for directions", the author takes students outdoors and divides them into several groups, each of which plays a different role, namely passers-by, traffic police, tourists and so on. Students improve their interest in learning through entertainment and study actively and happily.

(2) Physics teaching method can fully arouse students' learning enthusiasm. In the chapter of teaching pronouns, the author deliberately took out an apple and asked the students, "Whose apple is this?" "Is it yours?" "Is it his?" "Is it hers?" Or "Is it Wang Ming's? Through this kind of physics teaching method, students' interest in learning was immediately aroused and they participated in the discussion. Some said, "It's mine." Some say in Chinese: "mine!" . Then, the author prepared candy and juice to continue teaching. Finally, practice the usage of "yours, yours, his, hers, hers, mine, mine, its" with cups, bags and mobile phones around classmates. In entertainment, students not only consolidate these grammar knowledge, but also improve their interest in English.

(3) Games are a good way to stimulate students' interest in learning. Flexible use of various games can arouse their great interest. Therefore, in teaching, teachers should not only encourage students to play, but also be good at organizing students to play with them and guiding them to play meaningfully. For example, when learning the names of sports, the author leads students to play the game of "sports convention". In the game, the students are both nervous and excited. In the process of the game, they quickly get familiar with the names of sports, gain new knowledge in joy, and cultivate and develop their learning ability in the game.

(4) Competition is also an effective means to stimulate students' enthusiasm and strive for excellent results. Because in the process of competition, students' competitiveness will be stronger and their perseverance to overcome difficulties will be greatly increased. Competition activities can be varied, such as dictation competition, oral conversation competition, ability competition, listening competition and so on. Awards, certificates and prizes will be awarded in every competition. The bigger the prize-winning area, the better, which can arouse the enthusiasm of most students to learn English, and form a learning craze of "catching up with learning" by stimulating their interest and enthusiasm in learning English.

(3) Teachers should constantly improve their professional knowledge and show their teaching charm.

When a student likes a teacher, he will show the consciousness of learning from the teacher. An attractive teacher will attract students' attention, thus stimulating their interest in learning. The charm of teachers includes many aspects, such as the external image charm, language charm and personality charm of teachers. Therefore, teachers should pay attention to their own image, infect students with generous and energetic images, touch students with humorous language, and convince students with noble personality and professional ethics. Only in this way can students like teachers and English. At the same time, teachers should also have profound knowledge and rigorous academic attitude, which requires teachers to strengthen their study, not only have solid basic English knowledge and systematic English professional knowledge, but also have fluent and authentic spoken English, and at the same time understand the customs and cultural background of English-speaking countries.

In short, English learning, interest first. Interest is the best teacher. Secondary vocational school students' strong interest in English learning directly affects the effect of English learning. Therefore, as an English teacher, on the one hand, we should teach students language knowledge so that they can master skills, on the other hand, we should pay more attention to cultivating and maintaining students' interest in this subject.
