Fu Yu is not Chinese.

Fu Yu, female, born in China, played for the Hebei team before becoming a naturalized Portuguese citizen and joining the Portuguese table tennis team.

Fu Yu is a former Chinese table tennis player in the Chinese-Portuguese team. At the age of 43 this year, she still represents Portugal. Fu Yu is a former Hebei team member who went to Portugal to play because there was no room for upward mobility in the country. Fu Yu once said in an interview that she was very reluctant to leave China.

But she also saw another career path when she played in the European Championships in 2001 and won the third place. Fu Yu, currently ranked 17th in the world, is a traditional Chinese straight-edge fast-break hitter with a weird backhand push shot that many young players are not accustomed to on her backhand. She is also the No. 1 singles player of the Portuguese women's team.

Sporting career:

In the early hours of July 21, 2022, the WTT Budapest Championships concluded with the men's and women's singles 1/8 finals, where Fu Yu was defeated by Sun Yingsha 3-0. In the women's singles 1/4 finals of the WTT Regular Challenge in Almaty on Sept. 17, Fu Yu beat Chen Yi to reach the women's singles semifinals.
