How did Gandhi spearhead the development of the hand-spinning movement?
In July 1920, Gandhi held a grand turnip party at Pali to burn foreign cloth as a sign of advocating hand-spinning and hand-woven upper cloth, wearing upper cloth clothes and hats, and boycotting foreign cloth and goods. The masses all over the country followed Gandhi's action. In order to promote the hand-spinning movement, Gandhi, from September 19, practiced full-body wearing of earthen cloth, usually naked on the upper body, shaved his hair and bald head, and draped himself in cloth when he had to keep warm. He also set aside half an hour a day for spinning and weaving without interruption. He propagated the doctrines of his chanting to the crowd gathered around the spinning wheel. An ordinary task of spinning thread henceforth developed into a solemn sacrament, and Gandhi's little spinning wheel became a symbol of the peaceful revolution he led. All members of the Congress Party, from Gandhi to the grassroots members, had to spin their own yarn and pay to the Congress Party as party dues by spinning their own yarns and cloches. Driven by Gandhi, the hand-spinning movement took off with a bang.
