Three types of authority
1. Traditional type of authority: this type of authority is based on the sanctity of ancient traditions and practices, such as authority and obedience through succession to the throne and so on. According to Weber, the imperial authority of ancient China and the authority of clan elders are different forms of traditional type of authority.
2. Transcendental charismatic authority: This type of authority refers to the authority that an individual possesses by virtue of superhuman talent, outstanding character, heroism, and the paradigms and beliefs that he or she creates. The followers and obedience gained by the leaders and great men of the revolutionary era are the typical manifestations of charismatic authority.
3. Rational authority (juridical authority): this kind of authority is the authority that is based on trust and obedience to reason, law and bureaucracy and statutory authorization. This kind of authority is not based on loyalty to individuals, but relies on impersonal organizational structures and institutional norms.
