Why traditional martial arts now not work
It's not that traditional martial arts don't work, it's that traditional Chinese martial arts such as palm strikes, palm chops, eagle claw throat locks, grappling, tiger claws, etc., which are commonly used in self-defense and practical fighting, have not yet been adapted to fighting with gloves (once they are worn, these moves are null and void) and according to the rules of the ring.
So even though they practiced traditional martial arts and competed in modern ring fighting, they were not using traditional Chinese martial arts techniques.
