Purpose of double decks for bulk carriers

The advantage of a double deck for bulk carriers is that it has a smoother surface structure, and is intended to compensate for the weakening of the overall longitudinal strength caused by the large deck openings.

Single-deck ships are those that have only one all-access deck; double-deck ships have one or at least two decks in the cargo area. There are also three-decked ships and multi-decked ships, such as roll-on/roll-off ships and passenger ships. Two or more decks are mainly needed for loading cargo.
