The Records of the Grand Historian is the culmination of Sima Qian's life. It took about 15 years to write it centrally, and more than 20 years if you include the preparation of the sources. The history recorded in the Shiji begins with the legendary Yellow Emperor and ends in the early years of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, a period of about 3,000 years. Its style is biographical, mostly in the form of characters or family units, with strong storytelling and outstanding writing, and it is the forerunner and model of biographical literature of later generations, with profound influence. In terms of thinking, Sima Qian, because of his own experience, thought about "human beings" beyond that era, and really did "people-oriented", which is very rare.

The Historical Records have been annotated since the Eastern Han Dynasty, and the earliest and most complete old annotations in existence are by three authors: Pei Yin's The Historical Records Collected and Explained of the Song Dynasty, Sima Zhen's The Historical Records of the Tang Dynasty, and Zhang Shoujie's The Justice of the Historical Records of the Tang Dynasty. The matter and study of the Historical Records has been an important subject for scribes of all ages. Zhang Wenhu of the Jing Dynasty made an important contribution to the organization of the Historical Records, and Japan's Takigawa Ziyan's, Shiji Kaiji Kaoshi, also has a considerable status. Liang Yujian's Shi Ji Zhi Doubt of the Qing Dynasty and Chen Zhi's Shi Ji Xin Zheng of the modern era are all important research works. This book is mainly about the first of the Five Emperors' Chronicles, the second of the Xia Chronicles, the third of the Yin Chronicles, the fourth of the Zhou Chronicles, the fifth of the Qin Chronicles, the sixth of the Qin Shi Huang Chronicles, the seventh of the Xiang Yu Chronicles, the eighth of the Gao Zu Chronicles, the ninth of Empress Dowager Lu's Chronicles, the tenth of the Filial Piety and Wen Chronicles, the eleventh of the Filial Piety and King Chronicles, the twelfth of the Kao Wu Chronicles, the first of the Three Dynasties' Chronicles, the second of the Twelve Lords' Chronicles, the third of the Six Kingdoms' Chronicles, the fourth of the Monthly Chronicles of the Occasions of Qin and Chu, the fifth of the Lords'
