Do electric fireplaces cost money?
Electric fireplaces can be set to operate in either ornamental or heating modes. The cost of operating each mode is significantly different. The good news is that even if you run the unit with both flame effects and heat, it is relatively inexpensive to operate. Running an electric fireplace in flame effect display only mode will cost about $0.14 per hour. Running a ~1500 watt unit in high heat and high flame effect display will cost about $0.90 per hour. Of course all operating costs are affected by the cost of electricity in your area.
Whether it's a freestanding portable electric fireplace, a wall-mounted fireplace or other related inserts, they are relatively inexpensive to operate. Used as zone heaters, they can save a significant amount of money on heating costs.
