Architectural style of ancient Rome

Roman architectural style is sometimes translated into Romanesque architectural style, which is divided into two watersheds in its development process, namely the Roman style before the 9th century, represented by the Colosseum and the Pantheon. Its characteristics are huge, majestic and spectacular, and it likes to use a large number of circular arch structures. For example, the Colosseum in Rome has 80 arches on each floor and is equipped with a large number of decorative columns.

Most of the buildings in ancient Rome were square, and the roofs liked to be rectangular skylights to let the sunlight in directly. The room is transparent and bright, and there is a drainage pool in the center of the front hall to receive and discharge rainwater. From the architectural form, it can be roughly divided into residential buildings, Yugoslav capital, palaces, churches and public facilities.

The matrix of ancient Roman architectural style actually comes from ancient Greece. Because they conquered and digested Greece, there is a relationship of inheritance and development in various cultures, arts, customs and even religions. For example, the triangular gables, high pedestals and neatly arranged colonnades in Greek architecture were all inherited by ancient Rome.

The famous Roman column was actually born out of three classical columns in ancient Greece, namely Doric column, Ione column and Corinthian column. The difference is that Rome later added more new styles, or evolved from these, such as the application of double columns.

On the other hand, the construction technology was borrowed from the Etruscans in northern Rome at that time. Because the Etruscans were regarded as first-class engineers at that time, they were famous for building roads and bridges and magnificent water conservancy projects, so many technical problems such as stability were solved. We can see that the buildings in the picture below are closely related to the later Roman style.

Roman architecture blossomed all over Europe after the 9th century and reached its peak in 1 1 century. Compared with the style of ancient Rome, it has been iterated to the stage of 2.0, and has gradually become synonymous with European church architecture. The Roman style at this stage not only retains the basic elements of ancient Roman architecture, but also has the characteristics of heavy, solid and bright overall lines, as well as complex details and decorations, emphasizing the contrast between light and shade.
