Beginning around the 16th century, Filipinos wore clothes made of cotton and hemp fibers. Men wore a shirt called a kangan, which was collarless and short-sleeved, with a cloth called a baja wrapped around the abdomen and the hem of the shirt slightly below the waist. The color of the clothes is mostly blue or black, with only the chief wearing red.In the 21st century, the Filipino middle and upper classes tend to wear suits, while the common people dress more simply. Men wear shirts, preferably white, and suit pants; women prefer collarless dresses. Most young people wear Western-style leather shoes, while the elderly still wear slippers made of wood, hemp or grass.
The staple food of Filipino Muslims is rice, sometimes corn and potato flour, accompanied by vegetables and fruits. They do not eat pork and do not drink strong liquors according to the rules of Islam. Like other Malays they like to eat fish and do not drink milk. Cooking is simple and they like to use harsh spices. Eating is done by hand. The habit of chewing betel nut is very popular among the Muslim Filipinos.
