What is Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is natural heat energy extracted from the earth's crust. The energy comes from the molten rock inside the earth and is in the form of heat, which is the energy that causes volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Temperatures inside the Earth can reach as high as 7,000 degrees Celsius and drop to 650 to 1,200 degrees Celsius at depths of 80 to 100 kilometers. The heat is transferred closer to the surface through the flow of groundwater and the lava that pours into the Earth's crust 1 to 5 kilometers above the surface.
