Why do pregnant women fall off cliffs in Thailand?

Thai marriage law stipulates that if the wife is pregnant, then the husband and wife cannot divorce. This provision is called the "pregnant woman falling off a cliff act" because if a wife wants a divorce, she must jump off a cliff during pregnancy, otherwise the court will not approve the divorce.

Behind this provision is the importance and protection of Thai traditional culture to the family. In Thailand, family is regarded as the basic unit of society, and marriage is regarded as a sacred thing. Therefore, in order to protect the integrity of marriage and family, the Thai government has formulated such regulations to prevent couples from easily divorcing.

However, there are some problems with this provision. First of all, it ignores the rights and freedoms of wives and puts them in a passive position. If the wife doesn't want to have children, or there are irreparable problems in her marriage with her husband, then they can't divorce through legal channels, which will affect their physical and mental health.

Secondly, there are some legal problems in this provision. It may violate the principle of equality and human rights protection stipulated in the Thai Constitution, because it gives the husband more rights and freedoms and deprives the wife of rights and freedoms.

Therefore, although the Law on Pregnant Women Falling off Cliffs conforms to Thai traditional culture and values to a certain extent, it needs to be further examined and improved to better protect women's rights and freedoms.
