Why do you hang wormwood on Dragon Boat Festival? The origin of hanging wormwood on Dragon Boat Festival.

Wormwood is hung on the Dragon Boat Festival because wormwood can drive away mosquitoes and flies, remove dirty air, and represent blessing and peace.

The origin of wormwood:

According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, Huang Chao led troops to revolt. In May, Huang Chao's army arrived in Dengzhou at the gates. When Huang Chao was riding a horse to survey the terrain outside the city, she met a young woman with a bag on her back, a child in one hand and a boy in the other. She was running away in a hurry. Huang Chao took a knife for this woman's cruelty, and later learned that the boy was the orphan of this woman's eldest brother. A woman would rather let her children suffer than her nephew in order to live up to her eldest brother's kindness.

Huang Chao was in awe of this woman, so he cut off the wormwood and calamus by the roadside with his sword, let her take it home and hang it on the door, and strictly ordered the soldiers: "If you meet Aipu hanging on the door during the March, you must protect it." The woman was dubious and told her neighbors about it after returning to the city. The next day is Dragon Boat Festival. Huang Chao army attacked Dengzhou, and saw wormwood and calamus hanging on the doors of every household. Huang Chao really kept his promise to the woman and led the troops away.
