It consists of two parts: the upright copper column is called the watch, and the horizontal copper ruler is called the GUI. Put the watch at the north and south ends, perpendicular to the GUI, and measure the length of the sun shadow. In this way, we can not only measure the time, but also determine the solar terms of the four seasons according to the length of the sun shadow every morning.
A sundial, also called a sundial instrument, consists of a dial and a dial. There are 24 equally divided scales engraved on the dial, and the dial is perpendicular to the center of the dial. The sun shines on the dial, the shadow of the dial moves with the movement of the sun, and the dial indicates the scale to know the time.
Tools for measuring time by using the shadow of the sun are all "shadow clocks" of the ancients, collectively called sundials, but they can only be used in sunny days, not in rainy days and nights.
The fire bell means that the ancients used incense to calculate time. For example, after watching one incense, they made two incense. Or, they light a coil of incense (shaped like mosquito-repellent incense now) and see how much it burns, so they can know how much time has passed. Sometimes a yarn is tied in the middle of the incense, one end of the yarn is tied with a copper ball, and a copper plate is placed under the copper ball. When the yarn was burned, the copper ball fell into the plate and jingled. This was used by the ancients.
A water clock is a drop of water from a copper pot, which is also called "carved leakage", "carved leakage" and "leaky pot". There are single pots and multiple pots. The upper, middle and lower pots used in the initial pot overlap each other, and the bottom of the pot has holes. Put one basin under the three basins. After the last pot is filled with water, the water gradually flows into the later pot from the small hole. An upright buoy is installed in the receiving tank.
With the development of social production, the invention of timers such as missing engraving, standard watch, incense seal, rolling bullet, etc., has made timing enter a new measurement stage. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, people used timers to divide a day and night into hundreds of balanced minutes, and "minutes" began to become time units, which was a major change in timing. After the hundred engraving system was established, it was implemented for a long time. It was not until the end of the Ming Dynasty that the reform of engraving system in 1996 was put forward, and it was officially decided in the early Qing Dynasty.
