Do you know the festivals and customs related to yellow rice wine in China?

Shaving wine

In the process of children's growth, there are also many opportunities to see yellow wine. In the tradition of China, children shave their heads at the full moon. At this time, the family will offer sacrifices to the gods and ancestors, hold banquets, and relatives and friends will take turns to hold the children, and then sit together and drink "shaving wine." Some elders not only moisten their baby's hair with yellow wine, but also touch a little with chopsticks when drinking and suck it for their children. I hope that when children grow up, they will be as blessed as their elders to drink "Fu Shui" (wine).

Wedding wine

Yellow rice wine often appears in wedding occasions. Taking wine as a gift and wine as a dowry is an indispensable custom in marriage between men and women in some northern areas. The most representative here is "daughter wine". "Daughter wine" is brewed after the daughter is born. It is stored in a dry cellar or buried underground. It was not until the daughter got married that she was dug up and used for banquets or dowry.

Hanging like wine, falling like wine

In old China, before and after the twentieth day of the twelfth lunar month, the statues of ancestors were "invited" out of the cupboard, hung in front of the hall, lit candles and offered yellow wine sacrifices. This is the so-called "hanging like wine". On the eighteenth day of the first month, the year is over, so we should "please" the immortals. At this time, there must be sacrifices and "falling elephant wine". Relatives and friends, people of all ages in the family get together for a drink and drink "elephant wine", which means that the Chinese New Year activities have come to an end.

Dragon boat festival wine

On the Dragon Boat Festival on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, calamus and Artemisia argyi are hung in front of every house to ward off evil spirits. Drink "Dragon Boat Festival wine" at noon, that is, yellow rice wine, and prepare "Huang Wu", that is, yellow croaker, eel, yellow plum, cucumber and realgar wine. At this time, every household should clean up, because after the Dragon Boat Festival, summer is coming. Therefore, drinking to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival is a good health festival, so the custom still persists today.

Winter solstice wine

Yellow rice wine often appears in the health list of the 24 solar terms. Hunan folks have the custom of sending warm clothes to the dead during the winter solstice. On this day, after the memorial ceremony, the paper-made warm clothes were burned for the deceased to keep out the cold. This kind of sacrificial banquet usually uses yellow wine, which is commonly known as "winter solstice wine" because of its most significant warm-keeping effect. After the sacrifice, relatives and friends get together to drink, in order to cherish the memory of the deceased and connect feelings.
