Ethnic profile of Russia

The Russian Federation is a multi-ethnic state, of which the Russians are the largest ethnic group, accounting for 82.6% of the total population, and the main ethnic minorities are Tatars, Ukrainians, Chuvash, Bashkirs, Belarusians, Moldovans, Chechens, Germans, Udmurts, Ingushetics, Ossetians, Marians, Kazakhs, Avars, Jews and Armenians. In total, there are more than 120 ethnic groups.

Most of the peoples of Russia live in a centralized area, and in the course of their long-term historical development, they have gradually formed their own cultural traditions and way of life.

Russians belong to the Slavic race, the roots of which go back to ancient times. An important part of the Slavic race, the East Slavs were born in Ukraine along the famous Dnieper River. The Dnieper River is both the cradle of the East Slavs and their lifeblood. One of the tributaries of the Dnieper is called the Ross River, where one of the East Slavic tribes, the Russians, live. It is rumored that the name of the Russians originated from this river.
