What are the roles of Shengdan and Jingchou in Peking Opera?
Sheng: refers to a man; Dan: refers to a woman; Jing: refers to a man with a strong or rough personality; Ugly: refers to a funny character who puts white powder on the bridge of his nose, and is called a clown or a little flower-faced person.
The division of roles in Peking Opera is very detailed. It was divided into ten lines at first, and later it was merged into the four lines of Shengdan, Jingchou.
Various characters have fixed facial makeup, appearance and costumes based on the identity, temperament and personality of the characters in the play, and the stage movements of each role are also standardized.
In the early days of the formation of Peking Opera, Laosheng received the most attention, with the emergence of the "Three Old Masters" Cheng Changgeng, Yu Sansheng, and Zhang Erkui, and the "Three Laosheng New Masters" Tan Xinpei, Wang Qiufen, and Sun Juxian.
