Six translation methods of classical Chinese

The six methods of classical Chinese translation are: retention, correction, correction, deletion, supplement and adjustment, hoping to help students learn classical Chinese.

First, stay: that is, keep the original text without translation. Such as names of people, things, places, officials, emperors, countries, years, and words with the same meaning in ancient and modern times.

Second, change: it is replacement. Some ancient Chinese words are still in use now, but their meanings are completely different. In order to avoid misunderstanding, they should be replaced in translation.

Third, right: literal translation. This is the most common and basic method. It is to remove classical Chinese words that do not need to be translated, mainly referring to some classical Chinese function words.

Fifth, supplement: just supplement.

Tone: it is to adjust the word order to make it conform to modern language habits.

After mastering these six methods, it is not so difficult to translate ancient Chinese.
