The Influence of Traditional Culture on Modern Education

In October of the golden autumn, with the mandate of the Tai'an Education Bureau and the people of Tai'an, a group of 26 of us came to Wuxi.

In Wuxi, I was assigned to the same group and the same school as Principal Liu Fengbao of Xinhu Middle School in Dongping, Principal Jiang Gang of the First Middle School in Gaoxin District, and Principal Wang Zhihao of the Second Experimental Middle School in Ningyang County. The school we were posted to in Wuxi was Donglin Middle School in Liangxi District, Wuxi. The goal of our attachment in Donglin Middle School is to learn from Principal Ye Yingfeng - to be the assistant and shadow of Principal Ye Yingfeng, and to retrieve the true experience of doing education from Donglin Middle School.

In Wuxi, the first thing I saw was the former residence of Qian Zhongshu and its culture. Secondly, it is Donglin Middle School and the culture of Donglin Middle School.

Qian Zhongshu's former residence is on the right hand side of Donglin Middle School. The diameter from Donglin Middle School is only 50 meters. Where we live, out of the door and turn left less than 100 meters, is the former residence of Qian Zhongshu. Sunday afternoon, after settling down in Wuxi, I went to the former residence of Qian Zhongshu.

When I visited Qian Zhongshu's former residence, I was most impressed by two couplets and a family motto. The two couplets are "Communicator of the Golden Possession Communicates with Taishizi, and Taishan Shougui is like Yingchuan Jun". A family motto is "Qian's Family Motto". In it, Ch'ien Kim gave instructions to his descendants from the four directions of "Individual, Family, Society, and Country". I think this is one of the reasons why the Ch'ien family has been producing talented people for more than 1,000 years.

Doing education with culture, Wuxi, in addition to the former residence of Qian Zhongshu, Xue Fucheng, Gu Yuxiu, Qin Bangxian, Lu Dingyi, Bing and other residences, and Wang Xuan deeds exhibition hall. Using culture to do education, here in addition to the former residence, there is also the academy. The story of Donglin Academy began in 1111 with Yang Shi, a great scholar and educator of the Northern Song Dynasty; it flourished in the 32nd year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1604), when Gu Xiancheng returned to his hometown after being dismissed from his post.
