Traditions of the Sudanese Negroes
The traditional society of the Sudanese Negroes is polygamous. Circumcision is practiced by both men and women. In Central and Eastern Sudan, the lower incisors are removed during the rite of passage. With the exception of the Akan and Lagoon tribes, genealogy, residency and inheritance are based on patrilineal lineage, and in some cases on bilineal lineage. The Sudanese Negroes are mainly engaged in hoe-crop agriculture, cultivating corn or yams; animal husbandry is predominant in the Sahel. Crafts, fishing and hunting also play a part in different regions. Western Sudan and Central Sudan region traditionally developed trade.
