About Bird's Nest
Bird's Nest Vine is a plant of the genus Bird's Nest Vine in the family Rhamnaceae. Vine or erect shrub; branchlets spiny, alternate or subopposite, brown, pubescent. Leaves papery, subopposite or alternate, usually elliptic, rectangular or ovate-elliptic. Flowers sessile, yellow, fragrant. Drupe subglobose, ca. 5 mm in diam.; seeds flattened, retuse at both ends. Fl. July-Nov, fr. Mar-May following year.
The main varieties of Prunus spinosus
Prunus spinosus: leaves cordate or ovate-orbicular, 1-3 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, base cordate or subcordate; petiole 1-2 mm long as distinct from the original variety. Distributed in S Yunnan (Mengla), China. It grows in thickets on mountain slopes at 730 m above sea level.
Hairy-leafed Bird's Nest Vine: Leaves usually ovate, rectangular-orbicular, or ovate-elliptic, tomentose underneath, gradually glabrescent, distinct from the above varieties. Distributed in China and Korea (Jeju Island); in China it occurs in Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Sichuan.
