Characteristics of Gregorian chant

Single-part music form of unaccompanied pure vocals (male voices), with Latin as lyrics, improvisation without obvious beat and based on pure natural scales.

Melody: Generally, it is gentle, mainly progressive and three degrees, and the range is often controlled in a relatively narrow range.

Gregorian hymns can be sung in four ways: solo, chorus, alternate singing and response singing.

The melody of Gregorian chant can be divided into three types according to the combination of lyrics and singing:

Syllable form-one word and one sound;

Newhan style-one word and one polyphony;

Flower singing-one word tone, ranging from a dozen to fifty or sixty tones.
