What are the human characteristics of the UK?
The United Kingdom has nominally no official language, and in practice English is the main language. There are other official languages spoken outside of England, such as Welsh, which is still spoken in north Wales, and Gaelic, which is still spoken in the north-west Highlands of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland. Immigrants to the UK from all over the world also speak their home languages, such as Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. Britain has the highest number of Hindi speakers outside India.
Everyone in Britain enjoys freedom of religion, and as a result, a wide range of different religious beliefs have flourished in the centers of the country. There are two 'official' churches in the UK: the Church of England (Anglican) and the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian), but in addition to these, a wide range of different religions and countless denominations are represented in the UK.
Traditional sports in the United Kingdom include:
Rugby
In 1895, a number of Union Rugby clubs in the north of England decided to turn their players to the professional game, and a division between Union and Rugby Union emerged. English clubs did well in the Heineken Cup - also known as the European Cup. The England Rugby Classic and Celtic League matches are fiercely contested, so tickets are sold out every week. The RBS Six Nations Championship Six , is held from January to February each year. The Rugby World Cup, held every four years, is the biggest event in rugby, and was won by South Africa in 2007.
Soccer
Major soccer events in the United Kingdom include the English Premier League and the Scottish Premier League. While China was the birthplace of ancient soccer, known as "cuju" during the Song Dynasty, England is the birthplace of modern soccer. 1848 saw the birth of the first written rules of the game, the Cambridge Rules, and on December 1, 1863, a group of Cambridge aristocrats voted on the rules of the game, which ultimately led to the birth of the modern rules of soccer. Modern soccer was then born on the lawns of Cambridge University. Known as football in British English and soccer in American English, the game is played between two teams of eleven players each on a rectangular pitch, and at the beginning of the 21st century, with many British clubs hundreds of years old, soccer is one of the most popular recreational activities in the country.
Cricket
Cricket, also known as cricket, is known as "The Gentleman's Game" and is a team sport in which two teams of eleven players alternate between attacking and defending. Its modern form originated in the United Kingdom and is prevalent in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka and other countries. The cricket season is mainly played in the spring and summer, just complementing the fall and winter soccer matches. The origins of cricket can be traced back to the early 13th century, with the earliest rules of the game beginning in the 18th century, and it has gradually become one of the main forms of sport for men. The game is played over a long period of time, with a Test match lasting six hours or more a day for five days, with breaks for lunch and tea. Cricket terminology and the complexity of the rules of the game make it a difficult game for the uninitiated, but it is a passionate and entertaining sport for fans.
British movie productions include the James Bond series, The English Patient, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Harry Potter and Tomb Raider. Each year the UK*** produces over 90 films with a net output of £800 million. The continued prosperity of film production projects at home and abroad is dependent on the skill set available in the UK. Financial and tax incentives have attracted many national and international filmmakers to make films in the UK. Industry experts attribute the success of the British film industry to the availability of many talented actors; skilled and professional technicians and production teams; top quality studios, post-production, visual effects and sound equipment; and the ease of obtaining permits to shoot in a wide range of locations. British films are widely known for the Harry Potter series. 2013's British films include 12 Years a Slave and Gravity, among others.
On New Year's Eve in the United Kingdom, people often go out to visit with pastries and wine, and they walk straight into the homes of friends and relatives without knocking. The "New Year's Eve Ball" was another celebration.
