Located on the bank of the Yi River, 12 kilometers south of Luoyang, Henan Province, the Longmen Grottoes, which have been excavated for more than 400 years from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty, still have more than 2,100 niches, more than 100,000 statues, and more than 3,600 inscriptions, which are the most numerous of all major grottoes in China. Among them, the "Longmen Twenty Pieces" is the essence of the Wei Stele in calligraphy, and the "Stele of the I Que Buddhist Niche" written by Chu Suiliang, a famous calligrapher in the Tang Dynasty, is a model of the Regular Script in the early Tang Dynasty. The most representative of Longmen Grottoes are Guyang Cave, Binyang Cave, Lotus Cave and Medicine Cave built in the Northern Wei Dynasty, as well as Qianxi Temple, Jingjian Temple, Wanfo Cave, Fengxian Temple and Dawanwu Buddha Cave built in the Tang Dynasty. The largest Buddha statue, the Rushena Buddha, is 17.14 meters high. [edit] Login process In 2000, Longmen Grottoes were listed as a World Heritage Site, and the neighborhood was previously regulated by the authorities, who removed the man-made landscapes in the vicinity. [edit] Criteria for inscription The World Heritage Site is inscribed because it meets the following criteria for inscription: (i) it represents a unique artistic achievement, a masterpiece of creative genius; (ii) it has had a significant impact on the development of the art of architecture, the art of monumentalism, town planning, or landscape architecture over a certain period of time, or in a cultural region of the world; (iii) it provides a unique, or at least exceptional, contribution to the development of a civilization or a cultural tradition which has passed away; and (iv) it is a World Heritage Site which has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site for the last three years.
