The origin of dim sum

Dim sum has a long history. According to legend, when Liang Hongyu beat the drums to beat off the nomads from the Southern Song Dynasty, he was very moved to see the soldiers heroically killing the enemy day and night, so he ordered people to bake delicious cakes and sent people to the front to comfort the soldiers as a "little gesture". Since then, the name "dim sum" has spread and has been used ever since.

In fact, according to relevant information, the word "dim sum" was recorded much earlier than this folk custom. For example, Wu Zeng, a litterateur in the Song Dynasty, wrote "Preface to Knowing the Fast":> There is such a description in Chinese: secular examples regard breakfast snacks as snacks, and they have been said since the Tang Dynasty. After Zheng, an official of the Tang Dynasty, stayed in Jianghuai, his family prepared his wife's breakfast. His wife Gu said, "I didn't have dinner until I put on my makeup, so I can have snacks." Wu Zeng was in the same era as Liang Hongyu. He wrote books in Shaoxing, Song Gaozong for 24 to 27 years. The story of Tang in the book is well-founded and should be fully believed. Such "dim sum" appeared more than 1000 years ago, more than 200 years earlier than the legend.
