At the end of the 8th century, the Scandinavians overran Britain. The war lasted almost 200 years. During this period, many Latin, Danish and Old Scandinavian words were incorporated into English. Latin gave the English language many words, just as cooking utensils and cups have been associated with life. From Danish and Old Scandinavian, the English borrowed skin, legs, and the pronouns "they" and "their" in various forms. Many synonyms from Old Scandinavian were harmonized into English, for example, anger (English wrath and Old Scandinavian anger) and sickness (English sick and Old Scandinavian ill).
In 1066, the Normans conquered England. French became the language and powerful symbol of the rich, but the poor spoke mainly English. At the end of the 14th century, English again became the first language. By this time, many of the words used in England came from French or Latin, and many of the earlier words no longer existed.
By the 16th and 17th centuries, there was an interest in classical works. During this period, words from Latin and Greek were subsumed into English. Many words, or parts of words, from those languages were introduced into use in modern English. Today, English has moored words from most world languages. You may be able to find a word used in English that first came from your native language.
