What does witch hunt mean?
Witch hunt originally referred to the search for witches or evidence of practicing witchcraft to bring the accused to a witch trial.
Today such incidents are seen as a moral panic. They still occur mostly among ignorant or uneducated people, isolated and living traditional lifestyles who might accuse someone of being a witch.
But today the term is used to search for misguided or potential enemies (e.g., pornographers, subcultural groups), as in historical witch hunts, where the accused were treated with hysteria, stereotypes, and injustice.
