During the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, political turmoil, frequent wars and people's increasingly poor lives, Buddhism spread widely with its broad way of liberation and prevailed in the world with the meaning of empty images, and Buddhism entered a prosperous period. The Buddhist buildings here are mainly quadrangle temples, pagodas and Buddhist temples.

Many monks from India and Da Yue came to China to preach, and their architectural art was introduced. During this period, the Buddhist architecture in China was mainly based on Indian and Gandhara art. As far as grottoes are concerned, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Tianshui Maijishan Grottoes, Yongjing Bingling Temple Grottoes and Shanxi Datong Yungang Grottoes were all built during this period. As far as pagodas are concerned, it is mentioned in Records of the Old Man of Wei's Family that the pagodas system in Gong Fan is still based on the old days of Tianzhu, but the reconstructed cymbals show that the layout of Buddhist temples with pagodas as the center and monasteries surrounding them is a common way for Indian Buddhist temples. At this time, not only multi-storey pavilion pagodas were widely used, but also dense-eaves pagodas imitating Indian temple buildings appeared. The sculptures of Buddha statues in the early grottoes in Dunhuang and Yungang are characterized by rhinoplasty and rich ears, and have the artistic style of Gandhara.

In short, this period can be said to be a period of absorbing and imitating foreign Buddhist architectural art on the basis of traditional architectural techniques.
