History of Taekwondo

Taekwondo originated in the Korean Peninsula, and in the early days, it evolved from Taek Heel and Hwa Lang Do in the Three Kingdoms era of Korea, a popular Korean folk art.

Before 1955, there was no word for taekwondo in Korea, and Korean martial arts were also dominated by karate, tangendo, and a few folk taek-heel, etc. During the period of Japanese rule, a large number of young Korean students went to Japan to study, and received systematic training in Japan in Songtokan karate, and after returning to their home country, they began to create dojos to teach their students. After the defeat of Japan, South Korea gained national independence, a large number of karate, Tangkido dojang rise, South Korea's early karate evangelists will be the national traditional martial arts taekwondo combined with karate, known as Tangkido. And there appeared the earliest group of Korean dojos, which were later known as the Nine Dojos.

The word "taekwondo" was named by General Choi Hong-hee of South Korea in 1955. General Choi Hong-hee, while studying in Japan in his early years, studied the Japanese Songtaokan-ryu karate and incorporated it into taekwondo along with the traditional Korean martial arts techniques of taekwondo heeling and hand-to-hand combat. In short, modern Taekwondo is one of the Korean-originated martial arts sports that combines the strengths of contemporary East Asian martial arts techniques.
