The Origin and Development of Chinese Cinema

The Chinese movie industry began in the early 20th century, when Ren Qingtai (Jingfeng), founder of the Fengtai Photo Studio in Beijing, shot a clip of Dingjunshan starring Tan Xinpei in 1905, which was the first movie made by the Chinese themselves.

Between 1925 and 1927, 140 small and medium-sized film companies were set up in Shanghai; films were also made in Guangzhou, Beiping (now Beijing) and Tianjin.

After 1930, under the leadership of the CPC, the Chinese Left-Wing Writers' Union and the Chinese Left-Wing Dramatists' Union were established in Shanghai.

After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the former private film studios in Shanghai formed the public-private Shanghai United Film Studio, which was merged into Shanghai Film Studio in 1953.
