Wuhan Conservatory of Music is a south-central region of a complete range of disciplines, schooling characteristics of the outstanding higher education institutions of music. She is located in the most prosperous section of Wuchang Jiefang Road, east of the Xinhai Chief Justice Memorial red building, west of the Yangtze River, north of the Yellow Crane Tower and the Yangtze River Bridge. The college has a long history, the school site is the former Wuchang two lakes Academy site. Her predecessor can be traced back to the founding of the Wuchang Art College in 1920. 1949, the establishment of the Central Plains University College of Arts and Letters; 1951, renamed the Central South Music College; 1958, changed its name to the Hubei Institute of Arts. 1985, named Wuhan Conservatory of Music.
The college enrolled undergraduates in 1956, enrolled postgraduates for master's degree in 1979, and passed the master's degree of Marxist theory and ideological and political education of the second grade of the law discipline in 1999 and enrolled students formally.
There were seven master's degree-granting points before the adjustment of the catalog of disciplines and majors of the college, and after the new catalog of disciplines and majors was issued, the corresponding adjustment was made to two master's degree-granting points.
The college has 447 active faculty members. Among them, 274 are teachers. Among the faculty, there are 22 active professors, 91 associate professors and 113 ****.
The college now has seven departments of composition, musicology, folk instrumental music, piano, orchestra, voice, dance, etc., and the School of Music Education, as well as the Graduate Department, the Department of Social Sciences, the College of Adult Education, the Affiliated Middle School, the Affiliated Elementary School, the Institute for Music Research, the Computer Music Experimental Center, and other teaching and research units; in June 2003, it was designated as one of the humanities and social sciences bases in Hubei Province.
The college now has 2,863 students, including 148 graduate students, 1,604 undergraduates and specialists, 577 students in the attached middle school, 121 students in the attached primary school, and 413 undergraduates and specialists in the College of Adult Education.
The college has good teaching and research conditions. After decades of hard work, especially during the Ninth Five-Year Plan and the first two years of the Fifteenth Five-Year Plan, the rapid development of fixed assets increased substantially. Campus covers an area of 183.2 acres, school building construction area of 92,000 square meters. The value of teaching instrument and equipment assets is more than 10 million yuan. Among them, the research results of Zeng Hou Yi bell musicology and rhythmology have been praised as major discoveries and new breakthroughs by domestic and foreign peer experts; the Dean of the Conservatory of Music of the University of Vienna, Austria, Mr. Fiedermeyer, has explicitly stated in an official letter that these results are the new dawn of the study of ancient Chinese music, which in the final analysis has a significant impact on the study of the history of the world's music. Our research results in Taoist music, in addition to the mainland, but also in China's Hong Kong region and Japan, France, the academic community has had a wide impact.
The institute also relies on its own academic strength to host two Wuhan International Academic Conferences on Chimes Research, two National Academic Symposiums on Harmonics, two national exchanges of new works by middle-aged and young composers, and an academic conference on sight-singing and ear-training, trombone, horn, and clarinet for the national institutions of higher education in music and the arts. Teachers of the college often attend various international and domestic academic conferences, and the papers they submit and publish receive great attention from the experts attending the conferences.
The college carries out a wide range of academic exchanges at home and abroad, and has established inter-school exchanges with music and art colleges and universities in the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Belarus, etc., and the mutual exchanges, lectures, performances and exchanges have been going on continuously, and every year the college sends out a number of teachers and students to go abroad for further study, visiting lectures, performances and competitions.
The college attaches importance to the art practice activities of teachers and students, and has set up the Oriental Symphony Orchestra, the Chinese Chimes Orchestra, the Ethnic Chamber Orchestra, the Chorus, and the attached Middle School Art Troupe and the attached Elementary School Art Troupe, among which the Chinese Chimes Orchestra has cooperated with the international famous musicians, Tan Dun and Yo-Yo Ma, and performed in the U.S.A., Britain, France, as well as in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, etc.; the Oriental Symphony Orchestra has been performed in China, such as in Beijing, Shanghai, Anhui Hunan, Dalian and other performances; in 2002, it also undertook the Chinese New Year Concert jointly organized by the Hubei Provincial People's Government and CCTV, and performed successfully in the Century Hall in Frankfurt, Germany and the Golden Hall in Vienna, Austria, showcasing China's ancient civilization and traditional culture, displaying the achievements of Chinese composers in the field of symphonic music creation, and demonstrating the elegance of China's outstanding young singers and performers, all of which were highly praised by people from all walks of life.
The college attaches great importance to the ideological and political education of teachers and students, and insists on carrying out the education of basic moral norms focusing on patriotism and law-abidingness, courtesy and honesty, unity and friendliness, diligence and thrift, self-improvement, and devotion to one's work. Characterized by artistic practice of teachers and students, it carries out a number of campus cultural activities and often organizes teachers and students to participate in performances in provinces, cities, factories, colleges and universities, communities, and correctional labor management units.
