What's the difference between a mermaid and Jiao Ren?

As far as I know, Mermaids and Jiao Ren are mysterious and romantic creatures. They have different image characteristics, origins and cultural backgrounds. Mermaids are usually depicted as creatures with human upper body and fish lower body, while Jiao Ren prefers creatures with fish below the waist. Besides, mermaids are associated with love and tragedy, while Jiao Ren emphasizes mystery, romance and wisdom. As far as cultural origin is concerned, mermaid first appeared in ancient Greek mythology, while Jiao Ren originated from ancient China mythology. These differences make them have different forms and connotations in the fields of literature and film and television.
