Miao Dao is an ancient traditional Dao and one of the advanced weapons in the cold weapon era in China. Ring-headed Dao, which originated in the early Western Han Dynasty, has a history of more than 2,000 years. Miao Dao was not called Miao Dao at first, and there was no clear name at first. Because it looks like a rice seedling, the government of the Republic of China officially named it "Miaodao".

The origin of Miao Dao can be traced back to the Han Dynasty in China. From the development history of cold weapons in China, from the late Qin Dynasty to the early Western Han Dynasty, due to the emergence of a large number of formed cavalry, the sword attack method became a disadvantage among cavalry, so a long knife with thick ridge and single blade appeared in the Western Han Dynasty.

Because the end of this kind of handle is oblate, it is called "ring handle long knife" or "ring head knife". This long knife with ring handle was found in the funerary objects of 23 Western Han tombs in Luoyang, which were cleaned in 1950s. Among the cultural relics unearthed in Shandong Province, a long gold-inlaid official calligraphy knife was also found, which was in the sixth year of Han 'an Wu Yong (AD 1 12). The ridge thickness of Dao is about one to three, which is similar to that of Miao Dao today. Based on this, it can be inferred that Miao Dao had its embryonic form as early as the Han Dynasty in China.

The basic shape of Miao Dao was in the Ming Dynasty, and it was widely used. In the Ming dynasty, it was called "Imperial Forest Saber". Its blade is very slender, five feet long, and it has the characteristics of both a knife and a gun. It can be used with one hand and two hands. Killing the enemy at the cold feet is extremely powerful and comparable to ordinary weapons.

How powerful is Miao Dao? Look at the shape of Miao Dao. If Miao Dao is long, steel will be heavier. Compared with the long-handled hand knives and horse-chopping knives in Song Dynasty, Miao Dao is narrower, which can save a lot of metal. Although it is the same length, it is much lighter.

The blade is made very thin, but the back of the blade is supported by thick stalks (the blade length and handle length of Miao Dao just meet the standard of exerting force when wielding the knife, neither too long nor too short. Miao Dao has been improved and developed many times. From ancient times to modern times, the length of Miao Dao has changed greatly. At present, the length standard of Miao Dao is 120 cm to 160 cm, because the length varies from person to person, so as long as the length of Miao Dao is within this range, it can be regarded as a relatively standard Miao Dao.
