Why is psychological counseling in China not as popularized as in other developed countries?
China's psychological counseling is not as popular as other developed countries, which is determined by China's national conditions.
First of all, a person can only develop higher level needs when he/she has solved the lower level needs.
According to the latest Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory, human needs can be divided into seven levels: physiological needs, safety needs, the need to belong and love, the need for respect, the need for knowledge, the need for aesthetics, and the need for self-actualization.
And physiological needs and safety needs are the lowest level of needs, which is equivalent to the human need for food and clothing. Only when a person is well fed and clothed will he or she pursue higher needs, such as the need for belonging and love and the need for respect.
Only when human needs rise to this level will some psychological problems arise. It is also only when people have psychological problems that there is a need for the counseling industry to exist.
Because we are still a developing country, in the past few decades, most of us are still at the lowest level, that is, to solve the problem of food and clothing physiological needs, at that time there is not much need for psychological counseling, which will certainly lead to our counseling is not as common as in developed countries.
Secondly, the influence of traditional concepts.
In our country's traditional concept, if a person's body is sick, it is natural to go to the hospital to see a doctor, and no one will laugh at you. But if a person is psychologically ill, what we now call having psychological problems, people will think that the person is brain-dead, mentally challenged, and has become a psychopath, so everyone avoids them.
When I was a child, if I heard that someone had been admitted to a mental hospital, it was as if he had done something unseemly, and even the patient's whole family would be unable to hold their heads up.
Because of this, in the past, even if someone had psychological problems, they did not dare to go to the doctor easily. Fear of being ridiculed and looked down upon. This also to some extent hindered the development of psychological counseling industry in China.
Of course, after the reform and opening up, with the improvement of the economic level, we have solved the basic problem of food and clothing, and people have begun a higher level of needs.
Of course, along with the accelerated pace of life, people's psychological problems are also more and more, which also invariably, promote the accelerated development of the psychological counseling industry, but also due to the lack of scale of the existing psychological counseling room division, and due to the inspection system of supervision is not strict, so that the psychological counselors are mixed up, but also to a certain extent impede the psychological The popularization of the counseling industry.
