The date of the year when Yang energy is at its peak
The date of the year when Yang Qi is at its peak is Lixia.
Lixia, as one of the 24 solar terms, signifies the official point where summer begins. In traditional Chinese culture, spring represents the sprouting and growth of all things, while summer represents the heyday of growth. After the beginning of summer, sunlight becomes more abundant, temperatures gradually rise, and everything on earth enters a season of rapid growth.
In Chinese medicine theory, yang qi is a concept that corresponds to yin qi. Yang Qi represents characteristics such as active, outward-looking, hot, rising and spreading. At the beginning of summer, yang qi grows gradually and reaches the peak state of the year. At this time the sun rises earlier and sets later than in other seasons, the days are longer and the weather is warm. The human body's yang qi also gradually flourishes, and at this time of the year attention needs to be paid to the proper regulation of the body to adapt to the characteristics of summer.
The beginning of summer is an important festival, and people have some celebrations and traditional activities on this day. For example, in some parts of China, people eat a kind of food called "Lixia rice" on the day of summer to pray for health and peace. At the same time, people also engage in outdoor activities, such as hiking and picnicking, to enjoy the May sunshine and the beauty of nature.
The beginning of summer is just a time when yang qi grows to its peak, and it doesn't mean that yang qi will stop growing afterward. The growth and decline of yang qi is a seasonal cyclical process. As summer deepens, yang qi will gradually diminish until it enters the next festival, Xiaoshu (小暑), when the hot and humid period of summer begins.
Origin of the Seasons
The origin of the 24 Solar Terms can be traced back to the ancient Chinese farming culture. In an agrarian society, people needed to guide their farming activities and judge the timing based on celestial and natural changes. Wise farmers in ancient times noticed regular changes in the position of the sun's point of direct sunlight and the length of day and night each year, which led to the division of the twenty-four solar terms.
The division of the twenty-four solar terms was largely influenced by the ancient Chinese philosophy of yin and yang and the five elements. Each solar term is closely related to changes in nature and human health. By observing the position of the sun, moon and stars and the changes in the sky, people can make farming arrangements, celebrate festivals and regulate their health according to the solar terms.
