Types of Hubei Drama

Theater in Hubei has made outstanding contributions to the promotion of Chinese theater and has a deep history of development. Hubei is known as a large theater province, with more than 20 types of theater in the province. Wuhan, the capital of the province, is dominated by Han Opera, Chu Opera, Beijing Opera and Drama; the Jianghan Plain is dominated by Jingzhou Flower Drum Opera; Xiaogan is dominated by Chu Opera; Huanggang is dominated by Huangmei Opera; Xianning is dominated by tea-collecting Opera; Xiangyang, Shiyan and other northwestern regions of Hubei are dominated by Yu Opera; Enshi is dominated by South Opera and Lantern Drama; and Yichang region is dominated by Peking Opera and national songs and dances.

The Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theater was named the National Peking Opera Theater by the Ministry of Culture for its outstanding achievements in leading the national Peking Opera community. In order to further promote and develop Hubei's theatre, the Hubei Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government approved the joint formation of the Hubei Provincial Local Opera Art Theatre in 2000, and formulated a strategic pattern of developing Chu Opera, preserving Han Opera and revitalizing Huangmei Opera. Hubei shadow plays are mainly divided into two categories: "Men Shen Spectrum" (large shadow plays) and "Wei Spectrum" (small shadow plays): "Men Shen Spectrum" is mainly concentrated in the Jianghan Plain in Shinyang (present-day Xiantao City), Tianmen, Yunmeng, Yingcheng and other places, as well as in the Jianghan Plain in the areas of Yunmeng, Yingcheng and other areas of the Jianghan Plain in the provinces of Hubei, Yunmeng, Yingcheng and other places, as well as Huangpi, Xiaogan, Hanchuan part of the region; "Wei spectrum" shadow distributed in the north and northwest of Ezhu, Zhushan, Gucheng, Baokang, Yuanan, Nanzhang, Xiangyang, Suizhou area, its form and style similar to the Shaanxi and Yu shadows, Shaanxi, Yu and Ezhu Ezhu three places of the folk culture of the fusion of the results of exchanges.

The Jianghan Plain "Men Shen Spectrum" (big shadow) represents the mainstream of the shadow in Hubei. Jianghan Plain belongs to the hinterland of Jingchu, Chu culture is rich, the ancient bronze, bamboo and wood hard carving and leather, Shinyang carving and paper cutting and other soft carving techniques for the birth of the shadow of a good prerequisite for the preparation. It is said that there were shadow theater classes in Fengba Township and Zhongfeng Township of Zhuxi during the Ming Dynasty. In Northwest Hubei, there are two kinds of shadow theater classes: "Xige" and "Hange". The shadow puppet of "Xige" is small and sings "Shan Erhuang" accent, which belongs to Shaanxi shadow system; the shadow puppet of Hange is large and sings local high accent, which belongs to Jianghan Plain shadow system. Shen Hongguang, one of the Ten Great Women of Chinese Drama, whose play "Transition in the Same Boat" is an outstanding work on the national drama stage, has won the Golden Lion Award, Wenhua Award, and the Five One Project, the highest award for Chinese drama. In order to commemorate the 30 years since the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, and promote cultural exchanges between China and Japan, Japan East Performance Theatre Company has performed "Transition on the Same Ship" in Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou in Japanese version, Japan East Performance Theatre Company has also staged Shen Hongguang's two plays "Transition on the Same Ship" and "Happy Days" for more than 100 performances, which created a brilliant history of theater exchanges between Japan and China. Shen Hongguang will be the story of Hubei sung in Japan with drama.
