"Four Books" nineteen chapters have a cloud: "Learning from the erudite, interrogation, prudent thinking, discerning, and conscientious behavior." This is about several levels of learning, or several stages of progression. "Learning from the world" means that the first step in learning is to seek out a wide range of knowledge and to cultivate an abundance of curiosity. When curiosity is lost, the desire to learn dies with it, and erudition becomes impossible. "Profound" also means generous and tolerant. Only broad and tolerant, can be inclusive, so that learning has a global vision and open-minded, truly "the sea, tolerant", and then "love all, and pro-kindness". Therefore, erudition can be the first stage of learning. Beyond this stage, learning is rootless wood, water without source. "Questioning" is the second stage. If there is any uncertainty, we have to question to the end and doubt what we have learned. After asking, but also through their own thought activities to carefully examine, analyze, otherwise the learning can not be used for their own, is "careful thought". The fourth stage is "clear defense". Learning is the more debate the clearer, not debate, then the so-called "erudition" will be mixed, it is difficult to distinguish the true from the false, the good and the bad can not be distinguished. "Duchen" is the final stage of learning, that is, since the learning has been achieved, we must strive to practice what we have learned, so that the ultimate implementation of what we have learned, to achieve "unity of knowledge and action". "Dug" has the meaning of faithfulness, steadfastness, single-mindedness and perseverance. Only those who have a clear goal and a firm will can truly achieve "Ducheng".
