Learn original painting or illustration? Ask the master for help! Before continuing, let me clarify one thing: these two industries will overlap in many aspects, not simply black and white, but because my professional background is conceptual design, so I will try my best to make an easy-to-understand explanation from my own point of view.

Distinguish according to the final product.

Answer a basic question first. What is the main difference between pure illustration and conceptual design? The easiest way is to judge according to what the final product is.

For illustration, painting itself is the final product. When an artist creates a beautiful illustration, all the values are in the painting, and the painter's emotions, lighting, skills and so on are closely related to the work, so if the painting is unfortunately destroyed by fire, all the values will disappear and its magic will vanish.

But for conceptual design, the final product is not a painting, but a finished product. Take the popular iPod as an example. An Apple conceptual designer got this exquisite design after trying several drafts. At this time, a sudden fire burned all the drawings, but it had no effect on the final product. IPod sales in the store will continue. Therefore, the iPod is the final product, not its conceptual design. Lost design drafts can be easily copied back, which is completely different from original works of art.

Before we go any further, please remember this example, because it is very important to understand the final product. As a conceptual designer, your job is to create a product, not a work, so design comes first, followed by art.

Skills, creativity and speed

There are countless skills in drawing illustrations, because illustrations are to express the painter's ideas, which can be a perfect sunset or a child's smile. In short, painters can choose media, techniques and styles at will. Even a black spot on a white canvas is an expression of ideas, because any content and form can be called "art".

But in conceptual design, the key is to "convey" rather than "express" ideas. At first glance, you may think there is no difference, but in fact it is a world of difference, because designers' job is to invent new products, and their works must convey their ideas well. Even a painting with a sunset conveys the lighting information in the environment to the designer. A designer rarely works alone like an illustrator, because his work is only one step in a series of steps leading to the final product, so painting, as a medium, must ensure that others can understand the creativity. Because of this, you won't see a variety of styles and technologies in conceptual design. Many people's paintings are very similar. This is because style is far less important than creativity or imagination in this industry. Our goal is to produce excellent products.

Speed is an important factor in conceptual design. Because the final product of illustration is illustration itself, sometimes time is not important. A painting takes ten years, but it may be priceless after completion. For design, this situation is absolutely not allowed. The goal of our work is to make the greatest creativity in the shortest time. Please remember that all our projects have deadlines, and time is money. And there are still many people waiting for your design! There is no deadline.
