Wouldn't the ping, shang, de-vocalized and incoming tones in ancient Chinese be the modern equivalent of the one, two, three and four tones?
The ancient Chinese tones are Ping, Shang, Dao, and Jin. "Ping" refers to the flat tone of the four tones, including yinping and yangping, and "oblique" refers to the oblique tone of the four tones, including up, down, and in. According to the traditional saying, PingSheng is a flat tone, ShangSheng is an ascending tone, DeSheng is a descending tone, and EnterSheng is a short tone, and the Jade Keys song of Ming Dynasty's Shih Vacuum said:
"PingSheng is flat, and the road is not low,
ShangSheng is fierce and strong,
DeSheng is clear and mournful, and EnterSheng is short and urgent, and the collection is urgent."
Simply put, the key to distinguishing between level and oblique is "no level is oblique".
Modern Chinese
In modern Chinese, the four tones are divided into yinping, yangping, shangsheng, and deheng.
Anciently, the tone of ping-sheng was divided into yin-ping and yang-ping, the so-called first and second tones in modern Chinese.
Anciently, the tones of the upper tones have become partly de-voiced and partly upper tones in modern Chinese. The upper tone is the third tone in modern Chinese.
Anciently, the tones of de-voiced were still de-voiced in modern Chinese, i.e., the fourth tone.
The ancient incoming tone no longer exists in modern Chinese; it has been changed into yinping, yangping, shangsheng and deheng.
The table of the four tones in modern Chinese is as follows:
YinPing, YangPing, ShangSheng, DeSheng
First Tone, Second Tone, Third Tone, Fourth Tone
