Xi'an, the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties, is a giant city with a rich history and many places of interest. Countless foreigners visit Xi'an every year. Since some of the major dynasties in Chinese history - the Zhou, Western Han and Tang dynasties - all had their capitals in Xi'an, Xi'an represents Chinese history to a certain extent, and the "Han and Tang Dynasties" will always be a "proud historical era" that Chinese people dream of.
Coincidentally, in the administrative division of today's Xi'an, there is a district-level administrative area called "Chang'an District". Is this "Chang'an District" related to the historical Chang'an City during the Han and Tang dynasties?
Is there any connection between Chang'an District of Xi'an and the historical Han and Tang dynasties?
In 350 B.C., when Shang Yang's change of law began, the Qin government set up Xianyang County north of the Weihe River and built Xianyang City to the east of today's Weicheng District in Xianyang City as the new capital of the Qin state. After Qin unified the six states in 221 BC, Xianyang became the major metropolis of the country. In order to curb local tyranny, Emperor Qin Shi Huang immigrated 120,000 households to increase the population of Xianyang City. During the Qin Dynasty, Chang'an was just an ordinary town. However, the good times did not last. Due to the brutal rule of Emperor Qin II, the Chinese people rose up in revolt and the Peasant War broke out at the end of the Qin Dynasty. With the rebels of Chen Sheng and Wu Guang and the armies of Liu Bang and Xiang Yu ****ing the same efforts, the tyranny of the Qin Dynasty was finally overthrown. As the victor of the war to overthrow the Qin Dynasty, where to build the capital became an important issue for Liu Bang to think about.
The Guanzhong Plain is a fertile and fertile area, suitable for building a capital. After repeated discussions between Liu Bang and his ministers, they unanimously agreed that the Guanzhong Plain was the ideal area for the new regime to build its capital. Since the palace of Xianyang City north of the Wei River had been destroyed in the wars at the end of the Qin Dynasty, Liu Bang chose the south bank of the Wei River as the new capital of the Han Empire, based on the Qin Xingle Palace on the south bank of the Wei River.
In 202 BC, the Han Empire officially established Chang'an County, which was the first time "Chang'an County" appeared as a place name on a Chinese map. In 200 BC, the Han Empire officially moved its capital to Chang'an and built the magnificent Chang'an City northwest of today's Xi'an City.
According to later archaeological excavations, the site of the Han Chang'an City was extremely grand, with an urban area of 36 square kilometers, and the whole city was divided into nine urban districts with more than 160 lanes. The whole city was well laid out with wide and flat streets. The widest street could carry 12 carriages. At that time, Chang'an echoed Rome. There was a saying that "Rome is in the west, Chang'an is in the east". The population of Han Chang'an reached 300,000 at its peak.
Based on the above historical facts, we can see that in order to cooperate with the court in building the capital Chang'an, Liu Bang set up Chang'an County in the area where Chang'an Township was located in the Qin Dynasty as a new county-level administrative division. In order to manage the administrative affairs of the capital Chang'an Prefecture more conveniently, in 104 BC, the Han Empire established the Jingzhao Yin, under which Chang'an Prefecture came under the administration of the Jingzhao Yin, whose status was similar to that of today's "capital governor". Strictly speaking, Chang'an Prefecture in the Western Han Dynasty was not only the seat of the county, but also the seat of the prefecture, the seat of the capital, and the capital. Chang'an County during the Western Han Dynasty was like a surrogate for the capital.
In 25 A.D., Liu Xiu established the Eastern Han Dynasty with Luoyang as its capital. Chang'an was no longer the capital of the Han Empire, but the administrative division of Chang'an was retained by the central government. The administrative division of Chang'an County persisted during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. The Western Jin Dynasty, the Former Zhao Dynasty, the Former Qin Dynasty, the Post-Qin Dynasty, the Western Wei Dynasty and the Northern Zhou Dynasty all built their capitals in Chang'an one after another.
