Part I: Preparing the Program and Using the Tutorial

1. Download the MUGEN main program.

There are three versions of MUGEN main program for different operating systems. There are 0414 version which supports DOS, WIN95 and WIN98, WIN version which is suitable for WIN2000 and XP, and LIN version which is suitable for LINUX. The 0414 version has the best compatibility, but the 0414 version sometimes does not work properly on WIN2000 and XP.

The download addresses for the three versions are as follows

2, install and configure MUGEN.

Here, we will take the 0414 version as an example, and the installation method is the same for other versions. After unzipping the downloaded file, you will get six folders: chars, data, docs, font, sound and stages. Briefly, I will explain the role of these six folders: (chars) the directory for placing the characters, all the characters must be stored here in a directory (that is to say, a folder is created, and the character's files are unzipped into it); (data) this directory can be said to be the directory for the character's files; and (data) this directory can be said to be the directory for the character's files. (data) this directory can be said to be the core directory of MUGEN, which contains the configuration files of MUGEN, including system settings, adding characters, opening and closing animation control ......, etc.; (docs) inside the official tutorials on MUGEN, these documents are very helpful, but unfortunately they are all in English, and all the variables used in the game must be used in a directory. All the variables used in the game can be learned here; (font) which stores the fonts used in the game; (sound) as the name suggests, this is of course the place to put the music; (stages) all the backgrounds in the game are present here.

The following section will focus on how to add characters.

First of all, you need to put the folder of character files (the download of the character files will be provided in a later post) into chars, and remember: the name of the character folder must be the same as the name of the .def file inside the folder. Below, let's take the character Optimus_Prime for example, after downloading the RAR of the character file, unzip all the files into the folder named Optimus_Prime, then copy this folder as a whole to the chars directory, then use WINDOWS notepad to open the select.def file, and add it as follows Optimus_Prime:

Note that the "," sign must be entered, and must be entered in the English state, so that a character has been successfully added. Then run the main program MUGEN.exe to start the game.

After entering the game, you can see the following options: arcade (single-player), vs mode (vs mode), team arcade (team mode), team vs (team vs), team co-op (another team mode), training (training mode), watch (watch mode), options and exit.

Focusing on the options section, you'll find a very traditional fighting game menu that can be used to set the difficulty, life, time, speed, volume of sounds and effects, control devices, and team battle modes. The main focus here is on the input config option, which allows you to follow the prompts to select the device you want to use, either the keyboard or the joystick, which is clearly described in the menu, so I won't go into it here. Finally, remember to save your settings once you've configured them to your most convenient environment.
