The Qingming Festival is one of the twenty-four solar terms in the lunar calendar, and is celebrated at the intersection of mid-spring and late spring, 106 days after the winter solstice. The traditional Chinese Qingming Festival began around the Zhou Dynasty, more than 2,500 years ago. The Almanac: "Fifteen days after the vernal equinox, the bucket refers to Ding, for the Qingming, when everything is clean and clear, cover when the gas is clear and bright, everything is obvious, so the name." Qingming, the temperature rises, it is a good time for spring plowing and planting, so there is a "Qingming before and after, planting melons and beans," said. The Qingming Festival is a festival of ancestor worship, the traditional activities for sweeping graves. 2006 May 20, the folk festival by the State Council approved the inclusion of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
Customs of Qingming Festival
Sweeping the graves on Qingming Day is said to be "thinking about the time of honor" for ancestors. The custom has a long history. In the Ming Dynasty, "The Scenery of the Imperial Capital", it is written, "On Qingming Day in March, men and women sweep the graves, carrying Pusaetha scandens and hanging kozo ingots on the backs of the palanquins and horses, and they fill the roads with a lot of water. Those who worship, pour libations, cry, and weed the graves, burn kozo and put paper money on the graves. If there is no paper money, the grave will be left alone. Weeping, do not return, tend to the fragrant trees, choose the garden, sit in the list of all drunk." In fact, tomb-sweeping before the Qin Dynasty, but not necessarily on the occasion of Qingming, Qingming tomb-sweeping is after the Qin Dynasty. Only in the Tang Dynasty did it begin to flourish. "Qing Tongli" cloud: "year, cold food and frost festival, worship sweeping Xieng Khouang tombs, the period plain clothes at the tomb, with wine and food and scythes cut grass and trees of the device, Zhou calloused seal tree, cut off the thorns and grasses, it is known as sweeping the tomb." And passed on to this day.
The Legend of Qingming Festival
According to historical records, in the Spring and Autumn Period more than 2,000 years ago, the Prince of Jin, Chong Er, fled the country and lived a hard life, and Jie Zi Pui, who was following him, did not hesitate to cut off a piece of meat from his own leg to make him hungry. Later, when Chong Er returned to Jin and became the king of the state (i.e., Duke Wen of Jin, one of the Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn Period), he rewarded all of his followers for their service, but only Jie Zi Pui refused to accept the reward, and took his mother to live in Mianshan Mountain, refusing to come out.
Duke Wen of Jin had no choice but to set the mountain on fire, and thought that Jie Zi Pui, who had filial piety to his mother, would surely come out with his old mother. But the fire killed Jie Zi push's mother and son. In order to honor the memory of Jie Zi Tui, Duke Wen of Jin ordered that every year on this day, fire is forbidden, and every family can only eat raw and cold food, which is the origin of the Cold Food Festival.
The Cold Food Festival is the day before the Qingming Festival. Ancient people used to continue the activities of the Cold Food Festival to Qingming, and over time, people combined the Cold Food and Qingming into one. Now, the Qingming Festival has replaced the Cold Food Festival, and the custom of worshipping Jie Zi Tui has become the custom of sweeping graves at Qingming.
Ching Ming Poetry
Ching Ming (Tang) Du Mu
The rain falls one after another at the time of the Qingming Festival,
and the pedestrians on the road want to break their souls.
Where can I find a tavern?
The shepherd boy pointed to the apricot blossom village.
The Cold Eclipse on the Way (Tang) Song Zhiwen
The cold eclipse on the way,
The twilight spring on the way.
Poorly looking at Jiangpu,
I don't see the people of Luoqiao.
The North Pole is full of the bright masters,
and the southern sea is full of the chasing ministers.
The old garden is a broken place,
The willows are new every day and night.
"Cold Eclipse" (Tang Dynasty)
The city of spring is full of flying flowers,
and the east wind is blowing on the willow during the cold eclipse.
The candles were passed on to the Han Palace at sunset,
and the light smoke was scattered into the houses of the five vassals.
The Story of Lvmen (Tang) Zhang Ji
The ploughman calls for a boat,
The grass is green and ten thousand fields are green in spring;
Try to go up to the Wu Gate and peep at the county,
The new smoke is there in several places at the clearing of the dawn.
Ching Ming (Song) Wang Yu
No flowers, no wine in the Qingming Festival,
They are like wild monks.
Yesterday, the neighbors begged for a new fire,
and the window was divided into reading lamps.
