Master of Art Curating

The University of Sydney's Master of Art Curating program is designed to produce excellent curators for the future. For students without a relevant background, the degree helps them enter a new career field; for students who have studied in the arts, the degree helps them broaden their career horizons.

Study content:

This program is offered by the School of Art History and Film Studies at the University of Sydney, and the School of Art at the University of Sydney***. Students will study the history, theory, and contemporary curatorial practice of art curation, thereby acquiring a range of core knowledge and skills: art history, art criticism, the history of art galleries and their social impact, traditional curation (art galleries and museums) and contemporary curation (festival planning, commercial exhibitions).

The degree requires a lengthy internship. During the internship, students are mentored and supervised by industry professionals and participate in specific curatorial projects. These industry practices help students develop a comprehensive understanding of how galleries, museums, and exhibition systems work.

Graduates will be able to apply their knowledge to the maintenance, display and interpretation of exhibits, and will be able to work in the fields of art curation, art education, collection management, collection criticism, and exhibition planning.
