What is the biggest bacteria in the world?
1in April, 1997, a Russian expedition ship obtained a specimen from a reef on the Atlantic coast of Namibia, Africa, which contained the bacteria visible to the naked eye. Heidi Schutz of the Planck Institute of Marine Microbiology in Berlin, Germany, together with a group of people from the University of Barcelona, Spain and Woodshor Institute of Oceanography in Massachusetts, USA, named it "Namibian Sulfur Pearl". Compared with this giant bacterium, the traditional bacterium is like a newborn mouse.
Under the microscope, sulfur pearls gather together in a molten state and naturally live in seabed sediments with high hydrogen sulfide concentration. Hydrogen sulfide is extremely toxic to animals, but it is the food of sulfur pearls. Nitrate exists in the cell wall and oxidizes hydrogen sulfide.
In the extreme environment, there are some peculiar microorganisms, such as archaea in hot springs at a high temperature of 100 degrees Celsius, bacteria in the seabed and ice below zero in Antarctica, which not only excites people who study the origin of life, but also excites biotechnology experts.
