What is the meaning of the word "regiment"?

The meaning of the character "团" is as follows:

1. Introduction

Tuan (pinyin: tuán) is a common standardized Chinese character at the first level of the Chinese language (a commonly used character). There are two traditional forms of the Chinese character "团" and "团", each with a different meaning. The character "团" is found in the Jinwen of the Western Zhou Dynasty, and the ancient form of the character is derived from 囗 (wéi) and专 (专)声. The original meaning of the character is round or round object. All the words related to "团" have the meaning of "round".

Later it was extended to mean reunion, aggregation and group in the abstract sense. Can also refer to the military establishment units. "Tuan" is a new character formed by adding the radical "rice" to "团", specializing in spherical objects made of rice or flour. Both "团" and "团" were later simplified to "团".

2. The origin of the character

Shuowen Jiezi explains: "Tuan, huan also", "Huan, celestial body also", "Round. Huan Quan also." The ancients believed that the sky was round and the earth was round, and thought that the sky was a round body, so they used "圜" (圜), which indicates a round body, to explain "团(团)" and "圆".

So the original meaning of "团(团)" is also "圆". In modern Chinese, a round face is still called a "tuan face", a round fan is called a "tuan fan", and a turtle is called a "tuan fish" because it is round.

Circular things have the appearance of gathering together, so the gathering of friends and relatives is called "reunion" or "reunion". Spherical things are both round and reunited in every way, so "团" is also used to refer to spherical things in general, such as; dough, flour dough, paper dough, soup dough, thread dough, fried dough, and so on.

The unit of measure of a ball of something is also called a "ball", such as: a ball of flour, two balls of thread, three balls of waste paper, etc.. Spherical things are all in one, so a ball" is often used to describe the all in one, no two, a clear color, such as: a dark, a ball of peace, a mess.

Tuan also corresponds to another traditional Chinese character "团", which refers to a spherical food made of rice or flour. "Tuan is not found in Shuowen Jiezi (说文解字), so it is a later character. Jiyun - Huanyun: "Tuan, powder bait, or from Tuan." This example shows that the word "团" is also used as "团". Tang Bai Juyi, "Cold Food Day in the Jujube Dough Shop": "Cold Food Jujube Dough Shop, spring low willow branches."
